I recall one of the forumers Salixj homeschools her kids and wonder if it's the winning formula to education and child raising over the school system?

Personally, I think that it depends on the education level and teaching skills of the home educator to provide quality education and whether the children's temperament are suited for it.
It is very challenging for the home teacher, usually the mother, if she has to handle a few children of varying standards and personalities.

Advantages of homeschooling

1. Flexibility of time table which allows for rest and play at intervals. Excursions and family holidays are not limited to fixed vacation time followed by the school system.

2. Wide range of learning which could be adapted to individual needs and ability that is not restricted by a pre-set curriculum in most cases. Parents could tailor the subjects according to the special talents of their kids.

3. Individual attention : focussing on a smaller number of children may produce better results than a teacher managing a class of 20 to 30 pupils.

4. Close bonding between parents and children.

Disadvantages

However, there are some inherent disadvantages in homeschooling that cannot match the economies of scale and tried and tested methods of the schools system.

1. Home schooling mums are heavily taxed in terms of time and energies. It is a full time commitment. Besides household chores and looking after the needs of the children, the mother or parents has to do research and draw up a curriculum from scratch if they do not wish to follow the school syllabus.

2. Unlike the school teachers who are professionals and practice makes perfect, parents sometimes work on a trial and error basis and fumble along.

3. Social skills may not be developed in homeschooled kids who interact with their siblings and perhaps cousins and neighbours. A more diverse network available in school could help individuals broaden their horizon. Familiarity with parents and siblings may breed contempt?
