The Eurasians do not form a single ethnic group, but are the descendants of various Asian peoples (Malay, Chinese, Indian, Bataks) on the one hand and "Europeans" (the colonial powers such as the Portuguese, Dutch, and British as well as migrants from Central and Eastern Europe) on the other.
A distinct group of Eurasians are the descendants of the Luso-Malay or Kristang in Malacca. Their community dates back to the Portuguese discovery of the Ocean routes in the sixteenth century. After the conquest of Malacca in 1511, Portuguese were encouraged to marry local women. The Luso-Malay speak a creole language called Papia Kristang, which uses archaic Portuguese with a Malay grammar.
Kristang is Creole Portuguese and is spoken by the Malaccan Portuguese people. It is a 400 year old language which was spoken and never documented.

Drawing on Portuguses, Malay, Chinese, Indian, Dutch, English and Nonya cuisines the Eurasian cooking tradition is distinctive and delicious but not well-documented.

Since the turn of the century, there is a craze for the blend of East and West. Termed "invasion" is used by this writer. Eurasian looks are highly sought after in show business and modelling.
Eurasian celebrities : Tiger Woods, Karina Suwandi, Karen Mok and Tata Young.
| Quote: | | In many Asian countries Japan, Malaysia, Thailand the Eurasian craze coincides with a resurgent nationalism. Those two seemingly contradictory trends are getting along just fine. |
